A prominent technology entrepreneur commissioned Think Hospitality to develop the complete hospitality operating model for a new $300 million superyacht. With capacity for 35–40 guests sailing in extended four-to-six-week voyages worldwide, the vessel demanded service standards beyond anything available in conventional luxury hospitality — a seamless 7-star experience delivered in one of the most operationally constrained environments imaginable.
The client’s vision was uncompromising: every guest touchpoint, from intimate dinners for ten to landmark entertaining events for up to 200 guests, had to feel effortless. But superyacht hospitality faces challenges that land-based luxury does not — limited space, remote provisioning, crew fatigue, and staff turnover rates that can exceed 50% annually. We were asked to solve all of it.
We began with an immersive discovery phase, studying the vessel’s technical specifications, planned itineraries, and the client’s entertaining patterns to understand the full spectrum of service scenarios — from quiet family sailings with a core group of 10–12 guests to large-scale dockside events requiring rapid operational scale-up.
Customer journey mapping formed the foundation of our strategy. We plotted every guest interaction across arrival, daily life on board, dining, wellness, entertainment, and departure, identifying over 120 individual touchpoints where service quality could be elevated or where operational friction typically occurs on vessels of this scale.
Staffing was a central challenge. We developed a flexible crew model built around a two-months-on, two-months-off rotation, with optimised staffing ratios that maintained service levels while respecting the realities of life at sea. Crew wellbeing was embedded into the model from the outset — not as an afterthought but as a strategic lever to reduce the chronic turnover that plagues the superyacht industry. Our recommendations encompassed crew living standards, mental health provisions, career progression pathways, and rotation scheduling designed to sustain performance across extended voyages.
We also explored how emerging technology and robotics could enhance operational efficiency without compromising the warmth and personalisation that define true luxury service. From automated inventory and provisioning systems to smart cabin management, each recommendation was assessed against a simple test: does it free crew to spend more time with guests?
Sustainability was woven throughout the engagement. We advised on waste reduction protocols, responsible sourcing frameworks for food and beverage operations worldwide, and energy-efficient service practices — ensuring the vessel’s hospitality operation reflected the environmental values increasingly expected at this level of ownership.
Think Hospitality delivered a comprehensive hospitality blueprint covering crew structure, service standards, technology integration, and sustainable operations. The operating model provides the client with a scalable framework — one that maintains intimate, personalised service for private family voyages yet flexes seamlessly to support large-scale entertaining, all while prioritising the welfare of the crew who make it possible.
